American Macaroni and Cheese
The ultimate baked mac and cheese: creamy three-cheese sauce, tender pasta, and a crispy golden breadcrumb top.
Ingredients
- 1 lb elbow macaroni
- 6 tbsp butter
- 1/3 cup flour
- 4 cups whole milk
- 2 cups sharp cheddar, shredded
- 1 cup gruyère, shredded
- 1/2 cup Parmesan
- 1 tsp mustard powder
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- Salt, pepper

Cook pasta 2 minutes short of al dente. Drain.

Make sauce: Melt 4 tbsp butter, whisk in flour, cook 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk. Cook until thickened, 5 minutes. Add mustard powder, paprika, salt, pepper. Off heat, stir in cheddar and gruyère until melted.

Combine pasta and sauce. Pour into a buttered baking dish. Top with Parmesan.

Mix panko with remaining 2 tbsp melted butter. Sprinkle over the top.

Bake at 375°F for 25-30 minutes until bubbling and golden brown on top.
