Greek Horiatiki (Village Salad)
The authentic Greek salad has no lettuce β just ripe tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, briny olives, sharp red onion, and a thick slab of feta drenched in olive oil and oregano.
Ingredients
- 3 large ripe tomatoes, cut into irregular chunks
- 1 English cucumber, cut into half-moons
- 1/2 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, cut into rings
- 1/2 cup Kalamata olives
- 1 block (7 oz / 200g) feta cheese (one thick slab, not crumbled)
- 3-4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper
Instructions
-
1
Arrange tomatoes, cucumber, onion, and bell pepper on a wide plate or shallow bowl. Scatter olives over the top.
-
2
Place the slab of feta right in the center (in Greece, they never crumble it).
-
3
Drizzle generously with olive oil and vinegar. Sprinkle oregano, salt, and pepper over everything.
-
4
Serve immediately with crusty bread to soak up the juices at the bottom of the plate. Thatβs it β simplicity is the point.
