American Apple Pie
The quintessential American dessert: tender, spiced apples in a flaky, buttery double crust. Best served warm with vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
- Double pie crust
- 6 cups sliced apples (mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp)
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp flour
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp milk
- Coarse sugar for sprinkling

Toss apples with sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

Roll out bottom crust and fit into pie dish. Pile in apples. Dot with butter.

Roll out top crust. Cover or weave a lattice. Crimp edges and cut vents.

Brush with egg wash and sprinkle with coarse sugar.

Bake at 425°F for 20 minutes, then reduce to 375°F for 35-40 more minutes until crust is golden and filling bubbles. Cool 2 hours before slicing.
