Swedish Meatballs

Tender meatballs in a creamy gravy, served with mashed potatoes and lingonberry jam. The real deal, not the cafeteria version.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs soaked in 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion (grated)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp allspice
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • Gravy: 3 tbsp butter, 3 tbsp flour, 2 cups beef broth, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 1 tsp Worcestershire
  • Salt, pepper, lingonberry jam

Instructions

    Combine meats, soaked breadcrumbs, onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Mix gently. Roll into 1-inch meatballs.

    Brown meatballs in butter in a large skillet, turning, for 6-8 minutes. Remove.

    Make gravy: Melt butter, whisk in flour, cook 1 minute. Slowly whisk in broth. Add cream, mustard, Worcestershire. Simmer until thickened.

    Return meatballs to gravy. Simmer 10 minutes until cooked through.

    Serve over mashed potatoes with lingonberry jam on the side.
